And so it begins
I am so delighted to be heading into my first holiday season with LH. Admittedly, Santa Clause and tinsel make my heart pitter-patter. And who doesn’t love Christmas cookies? But what I am most looking forward to is the Great Sleeping Bag Escapade. What is a Sleeping Bag Escapade, you might ask? Well let me tell you. LH will descend into San Francisco on December 19 and pass out sleeping bags to the homeless like candy. But not just any sleeping bag. These sleeping bags have transitive powers.
Also coming up is the Latino College Expo in Carson City, CA. Stay with me, I swear this is related. LH’ers are going to spend an entire day find out that college is more than just studying; there are football games, and parties, and no one telling them what to do. And while luring them in like Hansel and Gretal with visions of homecoming games and sleeping in, we get to stealthily plant seeds of hope that college is attainable. Here’s where I tie it all together with a bow. The ticket to ride is, wait for it… a sleeping bag! So let me break it down: kid donates sleeping bag, kid takes road trip, kid exposed to awesomeness that is college, kid gives sleeping bag to someone in need, kid feels warm and fuzzy when it’s cold outside. Rinse, repeat.
I love that this sort of thing is a common occurrence at LH. And I love that LH helps children by providing not only mentoring, homework help and after school snacks; but by teaching them how much joy can be found in helping others. This Summer, for example, LH’ers found ways to give back to the community by passing out sandwiches and toothbrush kits. We happen to be shining a light on the Great Sleeping Bag Escapade so we had an excuse to think up a catchy event title. But really, who needs an excuse?! So off I go to REI to get myself a sleeping bag. I want a seat in that van!
Don’t touch that dial, this is going to get good.
