Who is a beacon of light and hope for thousands of youth living in San Mateo County?
Lauren’s House 4 Positive Change.
We are a rich and powerful country, but there are still sections of students who are unable to acquire college education and some of them do not even have proper homes. The overall school dropout rate over the years has reduced to 7% for the entire US. However East Palo Alto has the dubious distinction of around 60% of students dropping out after High School. These students belong to economically challenged sections of society. Many of them belong to dysfunctional families and grow up watching abuse every day. As they grow up, they often travel down the wrong path. While East Palo Alto reels under the crushing burden of poverty, West Palo Alto with its concentration of rich only a few blocks away presents a world of glaring contrast. The members of the East Palo Alto suffer from an inferiority complex which saps their natural confidence. Jason (name changed) a 13 year old boy goes to school now but there is little he does after school. He is one of the residents of East Palo Alto who see little hope in their life.
The noble objective of Lauren’s House 4 Positive Change Inc. “is to provide a safe space for at-risk San Mateo County youth and their families, that prepares them for success in life by exposing them to the beauty and possibilities of their lives despite hardships.” It is a non-profit organization and their sole motive is to lend a helping hand to students who come from socially and economically challenged households to stimulate their intellectual curiosity and interest, expose them to culture and the finer aspects of life like community service and build up their self confidence so that they go to college and get a better opportunity to realize their dreams. Lauren’s House offers several services free of cost to students between the age group of 5-18 to help enrich their lives. Education is perhaps the most valuable asset a child can acquire. Sometimes students who have the potential to do well in academics are unable to do so because of lack of proper guidance. Lauren’s House offers one-on-one and small group tutoring for students at different academic levels so that each child’s ability and need is taken into consideration. The House also provides both male and female mentors who give all the help a child needs to complete his homework and other academic pursuits. Lauren’s House also organizes several extracurricular activities which foster a child’s all around development like coloring and singing or taking part in a sports event. A thanksgiving dinner was organized which also helps promote social interaction. There are outings and trips which play a major role in not only giving pleasure but also widen his or her horizon. The House has organized a San Francisco trip, which involved going to a Giants game, taking a cable car to Pier 39, and enjoying a walking tour of San Francisco.
Lauren’s House’s is organizing the 1st annual Chess Tournament and Workshop hosted by Lauren’s House Chess Club. Chess is a game which stimulates the mind and promotes analytical thinking. It helps in developing formidable powers of concentration which is so necessary in doing well in academics to realize your goal and become a useful citizen of the community you live in.
